Karkheh dam has two important characteristics among Iranian dams.
The first feature of this dam is that it is the largest barrier of Iranian history and
also has the largest artificial lake in the country.
Karkhe dam is located 21 km northwest of Andimashk in Khuzestan province
(southwest of Iran). The project is located at 48 degrees and 8.7 minutes east
longitude, and 32 degrees and 6.29 minutes north. The purpose of this dam is to
provide water for irrigation of 340,000 hectares of downstream land, controlling
destructive floods and preventing damages resulting from it, producing hydroelectric
power and reducing hydraulic gradients. The type of Karkhe dam is of clay type with
a dam height of 127 meters and a crest length of 3030 meters. The dam's width is 12
meters in diameter, followed by 1100 meters. The volume of the reservoir at the
operation level of 220 m is 5.6 billion cubic meters (before sedimentation) and the
useful volume of the reservoir is 3.9 billion cubic meters (after sedimentation).
The water level at the flood event is up to 230.9 and the area of the lake is 220
meters at an operational level of 162.47 square kilometers. The length of the lake
is also at an altitude of 220 meters, about 60 kilometers.
